Over the last several days, can you think of the number of times you have been pulled too thin and said, “I wish I had more time?”
The truth is, we are all guilty of wishing we had more time to effectively complete all of the tasks and roles we have throughout the day in our life, work, family, and purpose.
Tasks such as being a husband, wife, mother, father, employer, employee, co-worker, chef, chauffeur, financier, and so many others that requires our daily attention, in order to properly function, can leave us all feeling out of balance.
And, did you notice where I said us? That’s because I, too, have felt the demands of a very hectic schedule and life.
For example. I am the wife to a man who works long hours that vary from week to week, a mom of a very active 7-year-old little boy, and an educator who worked in some of the lowest performing schools in my area.
Oh, and did I mention I was a bestselling author, and I am currently writing my second school improvement book, How to Win as a Superintendent?
Yeah! So, I can relate.
At one time, it all seemed like too much to bear. So, I took a time out on the play and consulted with my Coach. God said, “Keep the main thing the main thing.”
Not knowing what that meant, I kept my day to day tasks as normal. However, I soon realized that the things I once found enjoyable, no longer seemed appealing. And very soon thereafter, I began questioning my decision to become a teacher.
I actually thought about switching careers and leaving the profession.
Then, the unthinkable happened.
My Coach benched me for the entire summer of 2016. There were no teacher leader meeting, no leadership team meeting, no district planning sessions, and no lesson plans. I was on the injured reserved list. So, I began to plan what I wanted my day, week, month, and year to look like.
This intentional planning and prioritizing helped me to move the main things in my life front and center. And, this meant that distractions and time wasters were exposed.
With consistency and persistent, I was able to create a healthy work-life balance. Over the last three years, I have been working to not only maintain this balance but also regain joy in my life.
And, judging by the harmonious feeling in my home, the smiles on my husband and son’s faces, as well as the many achievements I have been able to accomplish over the past three years, I’d say I am doing a pretty good job!
So, now that I have found balance in my life and was able to keep the job I love, I want to help others find balance in their careers and life. So, I am offering this Purposeful Planning training free of charge.
